"..and speaks and thinks the truth in his heart." Psalm 15:2b
When I was reading this verse, I immediately thought of Luke 6:45:
"The good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and the evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For out of the overflow of his heart his mouth speaks."
According to this verse, how can we make sure we are speaking truth?
Are you putting truth in your heart? Maybe think through this list:
- Am I reading books that contain truth?
- Am I watching t.v. programs that contain truth?
- Am I listening to music that contains truth?
- Do I surround myself with friends that speak the truth?
Are you putting other things in your heart instead? What do you want to come out?
"With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in God's likeness. Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers, this should not be. Can both fresh water and salt water flow from the same spring? My brothers, can a fig tree bear olives, or a grapevine bear figs? Neither can a salt spring produce fresh water." James 3:9-12
With the kids: You can be really silly with your kids when it comes to this concept. Maybe something like this....ask them what they'd like to drink with their meal. Then pour something different in their cup. While they are trying to correct you and remind you what they asked for, explain that it will come out as what they want....it doesn't matter what you put in the cup. They will either argue or just be confused. You may get as far as having them drink it and prove to you that it didn't change...Play dumb. Really? it didn't change? Then talk about how the things we put in our heart will be what comes out in our behavior.
Memorizing:
"1LORD, WHO shall dwell [temporarily] in Your tabernacle? Who shall dwell [permanently] on Your holy hill?
2He who walks and lives uprightly and blamelessly, who works rightness and justice and speaks and thinks the truth in his heart," Psalm 15:1-2
