"But the LORD said to Samuel, 'Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The LORD does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.'" I Samuel 16:7
I was thinking about something yesterday. There was nothing spectacular about yesterday. It wasn't a great day, but it wasn't a bad day. It was hectic and busy, and there was a lot of whining in the house. Confession? I woke up on the couch yesterday morning. I fell asleep there the night before without setting an alarm. Thankfully I work from home, so I went to work in the same clothes I wore the day before. I took a shower at about 4:30 in the afternoon. Sound familiar? I have a son with strep, and the stress of my husband not having work. Yesterday, I worked a long day, had parent-teacher conferences, cooked, did laundry, went for a run.
But last night I was thinking about how God looks at a mom's day. I often read the verse above and think of it in terms of physical appearance....the way my body looks on the outside. But yesterday, I realized that there is a lot to be said in the appearance of our actions as well. I realized that often, I'm my worst critic. Amen? I'm the one looking at my own life and thinking, "What did you really do today?" There is nothing glamorous in counting loads of laundry and combing knots of out of someone's hair.
But God sees it differently. After some time with Him last night, I was able to look at my day very differently. Here is what God said I did yesterday.
- Today, you painfully stuck to good eating.
- Today you snuck avocado, spinach, and a whole head of bok choy into your family's meals, and they loved it all.
- Today you confronted two teachers about their language in the classroom and the example they have on the kids.
- Today you were an advocate for your kids.
- Today you pushed yourself and you made it two miles!
- Today you led great table time conversation with your family.
- Today you brought smiles to your kids faces.
- Today you loved your husband through his struggles.
- Today you let me lead and work through you. Good job!
How do you think God would evaluate your mundane laundry days at the end? Would he see them as you do? He is looking at your heart, and He has something to say about it. Have you asked Him lately?
