"Do not let your hearts be troubled.Trust in God; trust also in me." John 14:1 (spoken by Jesus)
let: yield up, lay aside
troubled: stir, agitate, to make (a liquid) muddy or cloudy by stirring up sediment
I love this word picture! Don't let your heart get all stirred up. Don't let it get muddy by stirring up the dirt at the bottom!
What I love about this verse is that it shows that it is passivity that lets this happen to our heart. We yield to the stirring up. It is so easy to do. What is the opposite? How do we be proactive with our heart?
Trust God! Trust Jesus!
Trust: have faith, to entrust one's spiritual well-being to Christ, commit
We can either passively lay our heart aside and yield to the agitation, or we can actively put our heart in the care of Christ.
What are you doing with your heart today?
With the kids: Can you guess? Yep! It involves a glass, some mud, and some water. Though it would be fun to let them go get the mud. You want your object lesson to start out clear. So put a little dirt or mud in the bottom of a clear glass or jar, fill it with water, and let it settle. After it has settled, show the kids the clear water and tell them it represents a heart that is trusting God. Let the kids stir the water and see what happens. Talk about how our heart gets muddy and icky when we let sin and fear take over and don't trust our hearts to Jesus.
Memorizing:
