The Son of the Most High

29Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. 30But the angel said to her, "Do not be afraid, Mary, you have found favor with God. 31You will be with child and give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus. 32He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, 33and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever; his kingdom will never end." Luke 1:29-33

Gabriel's message to Mary had several similarities to the one he gave to Zechariah:

  • He validated where they were at in life. ("You are highly favored"/"Your prayer has been heard")

  • He told them both about the baby that was coming.

  • He told them that it was happening through impossible means. (old age/virgin birth)

  • He gave them the purpose for their child.

  • He told them what to name the baby.

I'd love to hear from you today. What do you think was going on in Mary's heart and mind when she received this message?

With the kids: Think about dressing up in some costumes and acting out this part of the story. :)

Memorizing: 31You will be with child and give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus. 32He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, 33and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever; his kingdom will never end." Luke 1:31-33
